Ben Trunzo, BA, BPE, MSC

Ben is currently head Athletic Therapist in the Department of Athletics and an instructor in the Athletic Therapy curriculum in the Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at the University of Winnipeg. He graduated from the University of Winnipeg with a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Developmental Studies) in 1978, the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1981 and a Masters of Science degree from the University of Alberta in 1989.

Ben certified with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) in 1987. He has served on a number of committees for CATA, four years as an executive board member including one year as president. Three more years were spent on the national certification committee; and currently he is the certification chairperson.

Ben brings with him a wealth of clinical skills and experiences at the university, professional, national and international levels including his selection to the Canadian Medical Team for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, 1999 Pan Am Games in Winnipeg, 2003 Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo Dominican Republic, the World University Games, 1991 Shefield England, 93 Buffalo New York, and 95 Fukuoka Japan.

He has also served on the medical teams at the 1987 and 1991 Canada Winter Games, and the 1989 and 1997 Canada Summer Games. As well, Ben has been providing athletic therapy services to the national Women’s Volleyball team program since 1987. Ben has been an invaluable resource to MTCM for over ten years and is one of our founding instructors.

Carla D’Andreamatteo, BHEc, RD

Carla is a registered dietician in private practice. She holds a Bachelor of Human Ecology (Food and Nutrition) degree from the University of Manitoba and completed a dietetic internship from Saskatoon District Health. Carla is currently working towards completion of a certificate in Adult Education from Red River College. She is a distance runner and provides sport nutrition education to the Arthritis Society Joints in Motion marathon teams. Carla’s areas of specialization include geriatrics, aboriginal, and sports nutrition, as well as general health and wellness counseling. Carla has been part of MTCM’s faculty since 2003 and while continuing with her instruction at MTCM she also teaches at Red River College for the Continuing Education and Hospitality departments.

Shelley Glenday

Shelly has been an instructor at MTCM since 1996. Over the years she has been a major contributor to curriculum development, policy protocol and student support. A therapist since the early ’90s, Shelly has specialized training in the area of sports massage and has attended and taught several workshops across Canada. An experienced teacher in Advanced Techniques, Shelly also teaches our Myofacial Release course and coordinates our Sports Outreach program. Her specialized training has allowed her to provide therapy at several elite sporting events over the years including the 1992 Winter National Diving and Swimming Championships, the 1998 Canadian National Triathlon and most recently, her position as massage therapy co-chair for the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg. Shelly is very active within her association (LCSP) serving as conference chair for eight years and was honored to receive Fellowship standing and recognition from England for her contribution to the profession and the standard of excellence she has maintained in all aspects of her career.

Trish Penner, BMR, PT

Trish is a physiotherapist and proud mother of three. A gold medal winner in her graduating year at the University of Manitoba, Trish has specialized in neck and back care while serving as an ergonomic consultant for the Manitoba provincial government and a vocational rehabilitation consultant and childbirth educator for the Victoria General Hospital. Long a proponent of massage therapy, Trish also believes in the importance of continuing education and professional development.

Trudy Reimer

Trudy graduated form MTCM with honors in 1999 and along with her current teaching responsibilities maintains a full and growing private practice. Her clinic is associated with the Children’s Clubhouse a children’s therapy clinic which allows Trudy the opportunity to work with patients of all ages. Over the years, Trudy has participated in several advanced workshops including: Myofascial Release, Functional Muscle Release and Infant Massage. Prior to attending MTCM, Trudy also studied landscape design at Guelph University and for several years owned her own company, Gardens By The Yard. An integral part of our MTCM faculty, Trudy teaches Medical Terminology, Trigger Points, first-year Foundations of Massage and also sits on our advisory committee.

Nikki Spence

Nikki graduated from MTCM with honors in 2002 and also holds a Bachelors degree in Physical Education from the University of Manitoba, which she also achieved with honours. An elite level soccer player for many years on the Manitoba provincial team Nikki pursued her love of sports and sport therapy by taking postgraduate studies at the University of Winnipeg in the athletic therapy department. Nikki is the proud mother of one and maintains a hectic pace teaching at our college and treating a variety of clients at her University of Winnipeg massage therapy clinic. Nikki fills many key roles on our MTCM faculty including: Outreach and Junior semester supervisor, Clinic supervisor and Assessment Lab instructor. Nikki has also recently added Case Study supervisor to her responsibilities; a position that requires advanced therapy and critical thinking skills along with supportive mentorship qualities.

Lucie Roussin


A graduate of The Swedish Institute in New York city, Lucie began her training over 20 years ago focusing on both reflexology and Massage Therapy. Always a believer in both eastern and western approaches, Lucie brings a unique presence and vibrant spirit to her work. While in New York Lucie worked with a diverse and eclectic clientel which included Winnipegs own and former Light heavy weight boxing champion of the world, Donny Lalonde. While working with Donny, Lucie traveled the world and worked with other pro athletes and celebrities including Bob Hope, The Hartford Whalers hockey team, Al Pacino and as personel therapist to Jimmy Buffet on one of his national tours.
Lucie’s experience also includes several years in the hotel / luxury spa industry. From California to Europe, Lucie has been involved in several elite grand openings at both the therapist and trainer level. Lucie’s journey has led her to our College where she brings her considerable experience and passion to our Hydrotherapy program. Lucie balances her teaching resposibilities with her busy private practice and considers herself a blessed individual..

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Faculty

Garth Beddome, BA, LMT, ST


Garth has been a practitioner and educator in the field of Massage Therapy and Structural Integration for over twenty years. He first graduated from the Swedish Institute in New York back in 1986 and has since gone on to certify as a Structural Therapist through the Core Institute in Florida and as Personal Trainer here in Winnipeg. After his dance career had ended, while still in New York, Garth worked as a therapist with the Feld Ballet Company and developed his private practice working primarily with actors, dancers and professional athletes. Garth was honored to become Principle of MTCM in 1997 and advance into the Directors position in 2004.
While balancing his responsibilities as a practitioner, instructor and Director, Garth also teaches Massage Technique in sport at the University of Winnipeg in the Athletic Therapy department. Career highlights to date include: working with The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and being one of four Canadians selected to the International Sports Massage Team for the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics.

 

Alison Deneweth, BPE, CAT (C), ATC, CSC

Alison is a certified Athletic Therapist with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education and Sport Science from the University of Alberta. In addition to teaching at the Massage Therapy College of Manitoba, she has instructed labs in anatomy, exercise physiology and fitness conditioning at the University of Winnipeg and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Manitoba. Alison is sole proprietor of Allsport, a private clinic located in Selkirk, Manitoba and has been selected to the core medical team for the Canada games on four separate occasions. Most recently, Alison was a team therapist for the 2003 World Junior under 17 hockey championships and chief therapist for the Western Canada Summer Games.

Glen Bergeron, PhD, CAT (C)

Glen is associate professor and coordinator of the Athletic Therapy curriculum at the University of Winnipeg. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1973 and a Masters of Science from the University of Alberta in 1978. Glen completed his PhD in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Manitoba in 1992. A certified athletic therapist since 1975, Glen served as an executive member of the CATA for eight years, four as president. His contribution to the CATA has been acknowledged by way of a Special Recognition award in 1984; Outstanding Educator Award in 1993 and his induction into the CATA Hall of Fame in 1997.

Glen brings with him a wealth of clinical skills and experiences at the university, professional, national and international levels including his selection to the Canadian Medical Team for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Chief Therapist for the 1990 Western Canada Summer Games, the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, the 1995 World Cross-Country Running Championships in Durham England and the Chief Therapist for the 1995 World University Games in Japan. He worked as the coordinator of Athletic Therapy services at the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and the chief therapist for the Canadian medical team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Sue-Anne Marie Hamilton

Sue-Anne completed her degree at the University of Winnipeg majoring in Sport Studies while playing for the university women’s volleyball team. A graduate with honours from MTCM, Sue-Anne recently opened her own clinic on Osborne st. called Hamilton Healing. As a licensed Massage Therapist and a clinic owner, Sue-Anne has developed a thriving practice working with a variety of clients. Sue-Anne has been a teaching assistant at our college since 2001, handling both supervision and clinic responsibilities. A world traveler who loves life, her family and friends, Sue-Anne always brings a positive energy to everything she does.

Jackie Halliburton

Jackie has been with the college for almost 10 years and in that time has served in both an advisory and teaching capacity. Jackie graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Nursing degree. For eleven years, Jackie was a public health nurse for the city of Winnipeg. Her extensive knowledge in the areas of communicable disease, health promotion, and disease prevention enable her to bring clinical experience to our Pathology and Public Health courses. Over the years, Jackie has taken numerous courses in adult education and creative teaching. She utilizes an array of teaching tools in order to address the variety of learning styles our students present us with. Recently, Jackie facilitated a faculty development workshop in order to share her experiences and encourage all our instructors to teach outside the box.

Tom Dubreuil

Tom graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1995 with a degree in Social Work. After working for five years in northern Manitoba, Tom decided to return to school and broaden his perspective on health and healing. During his time up north, Tom came to the realization that the mind could not be entirely healed without dealing with the health of the body. This led to Tom’s enrollment at MTCM in 2000. Having a particular interest in health and wellness in the workplace, Tom sought out additional training in this area after graduation, which also led to his pioneering MTCM’s course on seated-workplace massage. He continues to develop and teach this course today. Tom’s outside interests have always included sports, in particular: martial arts, triathlon and swimming.

Deborah Romeyn, BPE, Ed. Cert

Deborah holds her Physical Education degree from the University of Manitoba and was a gold medallist in her graduating class of 1978. She continued on to postgraduate education in the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Anatomy and also certified as a teacher. Deb has been teaching in high school and university classrooms for over twenty years and has been an integral part of MTCM’s faculty since its inception in 1995.

Deborah’s massage training began at the Institute of Psycho-structural Balancing in San Diego in 1987. She has continued her studies in Crainiosacral Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Lymphatic Drainage, Myofascial Technique and a variety of energy-based techniques. She is profoundly interested in mind-body-spirit connections and has worked extensively with people with long-term, chronic, or terminal illness. She is a sought after speaker and does presentations at conferences on cancer care and palliative care across Canada.

In addition to her massage therapy work, Deborah is a Manitoba singer and songwriter with three recordings to her credit. She also teaches high school biology and East-West medicine at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg.
